The BC Sailing Offshore Personal Survival Course (Safety at Sea - Sea Survival) is for experienced sailors who are participating in distance and offshore races and passages.  The course includes classroom and practical sessions.  Topics covered include safety equipment, storm sails, weather forecasts, heavy weather, man overboard, emergency signals and communications.  Practical sessions include inflating and using lifejackets, life rafts and other safety equipment in a pool environment.  The course is Sail Canada-ISAF approved.  Participants who successfully complete the course receive BC Sailing Offshore Personal Survival Course certificate, valid for five years.

The ARO course, suitable for those with little experience on a race committee, covers the duties of each job on the committee, with some attention to the structure of racing and the rules. The course takes about 6 hours, for groups of 8 to 25 people.

The Program Manager Module is open to coaches and others looking to take on an administrative role within their learn to sail program.  Topics covered to include marketing, registration, communication and safety.  The course is not recommended for first and second year instructors.

Course Cancelled

The Fundamental is a two-day in-class theory course and an important prerequisite for all other instructor and coaching courses.  The Fundamental covers the key principles behind teaching and coaching, including professionalism, ethics, risk managament, planning a practice, teaching methods and skill development.

The CRO course covers the duties of a Race Officer in charge of a race course, including organization, setting courses, starting, controlling events throughout the race and finishing procedures. Prior experience on a race committee, or a racing experience is beneficial. The course takes about 12 hours, and will be given Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 4pm each day.  Space is limited to 20 people.

The CANSail Technical course is the practical application of the theory learned in the Fundamental course.  It gives coaches a chance to get on the water and coach real sailors with assistance from Learning Facilitators.  CANSail 5 & 6 instructors can only teach CANSail 5 & 6.  Levels can be taken in any order provided prerequisites are met.

The Opti Module is a professional development course designed for coaches who will be working with young athletes age 5-13 in optimist dinghies.  Emphasis is on rigging for safety and speed and sailing techniques.

This is a practical, on-water safety course that will prepare coaches for possible emergencies.  It is expected that coaches review this material prior to the course.

The Community Instructor module is an introduction to coaching course for new instructors who want to start as an assistant coach or volunteer with a sailing program.  Community instructors are "Instructors in Training" cannot certify CANSail levels and may not be eligible for Sail Canada Coach Insurance.  Community Instructors must also take the Coach Boat Safety course, and are recommended to take the Fundamental course.

This professional development course focuses specifically on double-handedboats.  The main focus will be rigging and skill development in 420s, with some discussion about 470s, 29ers and 49ers.  Upon successful completion of this course, coaches will be trained to teach Spin & Trap 1 and 2.
